China has established a modern molecular and diagnostic pathology laboratory in San Fernando, Pampanga, significantly boosting the Philippines' daily testing capacity for COVID-19 by an additional 3,000 tests.
The new laboratory, named Huo-Yan Lab, is a donation from China aimed at helping the Philippines mitigate the spread of the coronavirus disease.
Key officials present at the launch included Chinese Ambassador to the Philippines Huang Xilian, Health Secretary Francisco Duque III, Cabinet Secretary Karlo Alexei Nograles, and Asian Development Bank (ADB) Vice President Ahmed Saeed.
The Chinese government also donated emergency medical supplies, including ventilators, testing kits, protective suits, and masks, to aid the Philippines in its fight against the pandemic.
The Huo-Yan Lab Solution, introduced by ADB, has been implemented in over 20 countries globally to enhance COVID-19 detection capabilities.
Developed by the Chinese company BGI, the Huo-Yan laboratory played a crucial role in controlling the virus in Wuhan, where it was first observed.
With the increased testing capacity, the laboratory is expected to facilitate the gradual resumption of work and normal life in the Philippines.
Foreign Affairs Secretary Teodoro Locsin Jr. personally received a portion of the donated testing kits and protective suits, emphasizing the need for efficient distribution.
The donations were promptly handed over to the National Task Force on COVID-19 Chief Implementer Carlito Galvez for immediate release to those in need.
Following the turnover ceremony, Secretary Locsin and Ambassador Huang held a private meeting at the Department of Foreign Affairs office.
