Chinese ships harass, perform dangerous maneuvers vs PH vessels during WPS resupply mission
The China Coast Guard (CCG) water cannoned a Philippine resupply ship, the Unaizah May 4 (UM4), during a resupply mission to Ayungin Shoal in the West Philippine Sea, causing injuries to Filipino crewmen.
CCG vessels also performed dangerous maneuvers and repeatedly attacked UM4, resulting in extensive damage to the resupply vessel.
The Chinese vessels obstructed the media's view and came as close as one meter to Philippine Coast Guard vessels BRP Cabra and BRP Sindangan.
Previously, CCG and China Maritime Militia Vessels had encircled the Philippine vessel MRRV 4409, impeding its escort of a resupply boat.
PCG spokesman Commodore Jay Tarriela described the Chinese maritime forces' behavior as irresponsible and provocative, showing a disregard for the Convention on the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea (COLREGS).
