The Catholic Bishops' Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) has officially designated the EDSA Shrine as a National Shrine.
The CBCP also elevated the Archdiocesan Shrine of Our Lady of Loreto in Sampaloc, Manila, and the Diocesan Shrine of Our Lady of Aranzazu in San Mateo, Rizal to National Shrine status.
These designations were made during the CBCP's 129th plenary assembly held on January 25, with more than 70 bishops in attendance.
The EDSA Shrine, built in 1989, commemorates the 1986 People Power Revolution and was also the site of a 2001 demonstration that led to the ouster of former president Joseph Estrada.
The Loreto Church houses a centuries-old image of the Virgin Mary as Our Lady of Loreto and is the only parish in the country dedicated to this Marian title.
The Aranzazu Shrine in San Mateo, Rizal, has a history dating back to 1596.
