CBCP designates 3 churches as national shrines

The Catholic Bishops' Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) has designated three churches as national shrines.

These newly recognized shrines are the Archdiocesan Shrine of Mary, Queen of Peace (EDSA Shrine) in Quezon City, the Archdiocesan Shrine of Our Lady of Loreto in Sampaloc, Manila, and the Diocesan Shrine of Our Lady of Aranzazu in San Mateo, Rizal.

The EDSA Shrine, built in 1989, commemorates the 1986 People Power Revolution and the 2001 demonstration that ousted former President Joseph Estrada.

The Loreto Shrine, originally built by Franciscans in 1613 and restored in 1958, is the only parish dedicated to Our Lady of Loreto in the Philippines.

Its historic image of the Virgin Mary is housed within the church.

The Aranzazu Shrine's history dates back to 1596, with its patronage shifting to Our Lady of Aranzazu in 1705, making it the country's only church dedicated to this Marian title.
