BuCor assures safety of Mary Jane Veloso upon return to PH

The Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) has guaranteed the safety and security of Mary Jane Veloso once she returns to the Philippines to continue serving her sentence.

BuCor Director General Gregorio Pio P. Catapang Jr. issued the assurance amidst concerns from Veloso's family about potential threats from international drug syndicates.

Veloso was sentenced to death by an Indonesian court in 2010 for attempting to smuggle 2.6 kilograms of heroin into the country.

The Indonesian government recently agreed to repatriate Veloso to the Philippines to serve the remainder of her prison term.

Upon her arrival, Veloso will first be held at the Reception and Diagnostic Center of the Correctional Institution for Women in Mandaluyong City for a brief period.

Catapang emphasized that the Correctional Institution for Women houses only female inmates, unlike facilities where major drug lords are detained.
