Indonesia eyes transfer of Mary Jane Veloso to PH

Indonesia is considering transferring Filipina death row inmate Mary Jane Veloso to the Philippines under a new prisoner transfer policy after 14 years of incarceration.

The possibility was discussed by Indonesian Coordinating Minister Yusril Ihza Mahendra with Philippine Ambassador Gina Alagon Jamoralin and with President Prabowo Subianto.

The Philippine government, through DFA Undersecretary Eduardo Jose de Vega, expressed hope for a mutually agreed solution that will benefit Veloso and her family, and anticipates announcing something positive soon.

Veloso was arrested in 2010 for allegedly smuggling heroin and was sentenced to death, a verdict upheld by the Indonesian Supreme Court in 2015.

She received a last-minute reprieve when recruiters who allegedly duped her into smuggling the drugs surrendered to Philippine authorities.
