Boracay power restored after 2-day outage due to cable fault

Electricity has been restored to Boracay Island and nearby towns as of Tuesday afternoon, September 16, following a two-day outage that began on Saturday, September 13.

The power interruption was caused by a fault in the underground cables near the Caticlan Airport arrival area, which isolated Boracay, Malay, and Buruanga from the main power grid.

The National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) and the Aklan Electric Cooperative (AKELCO) have erected an 800-meter temporary overhead line as a stop-gap measure.

While power is back, the temporary solution is acknowledged by the National Electrification Administration (NEA) as a band-aid fix.

The Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry Boracay Chapter and the Department of Tourism are urging for a permanent solution to prevent future disruptions, especially with the approaching amihan season.

Permanent repairs on the damaged underground cables are underway, and the NGCP is also fast-tracking the Nabas-Caticlan-Boracay Transmission Line Project.
