Bong Go urges faster release of COVID-19 aid

Senator Christopher "Bong" Go has urged the government to expedite the release of funds for social amelioration programs aimed at assisting Filipinos affected by the COVID-19 pandemic and the enhanced community quarantine.

Go emphasized the need for fair and equal distribution of aid, stressing that politics should have no place in the process, with agencies like the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) taking the lead.

Financial assistance for displaced workers is being handled by the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE), while vulnerable sectors are being supported by the DSWD, as outlined in the Bayanihan to Heal as One Act.

The Senator highlighted that the priority is to address immediate healthcare needs and provide cash and food assistance to those most impacted by the crisis.

He reminded concerned agencies, including the Department of Agriculture and the Department of Trade and Industry, to fulfill their mandates swiftly and ensure the unhampered movement of goods and sufficient food supply.

Go specifically pointed out the need to focus on the jobless, those without savings, vulnerable groups like senior citizens and persons with disabilities, and informal economy workers.

The Department of Budget and Management has requested the release of P2.84 billion for DOLE to aid displaced private sector employees.

A significant portion of the requested fund for DOLE will be allocated to the Tulong Panghanapbuhay Para sa Disadvantaged/Displaced Workers and Government Internship Program (TUPAD-GIP).

Go affirmed his commitment as a legislator to closely monitor the provision of aid and ensure that every peso allocated for combating COVID-19 is accounted for.
