The Bureau of Immigration (BI) is preparing for a further reduction in international travel following the Manila International Airport Authority's (MIAA) suspension of all commercial flights to and from the Philippines starting May 3.
BI Commissioner Jaime Morente stated that this temporary halt in commercial flights is a "necessary sacrifice" to help curb the spread of the coronavirus.
Morente added that the move is essential in further slowing down the spread of the virus, as well as giving the country more time to increase its capacities in managing this disease.
In April, the BI recorded 41,249 arrivals, mostly Filipinos including repatriated workers, and 23,187 departures, mostly foreigners who went back to their home countries.
The BI used to see more than half a million arrivals and departures per month before the suspension.
Cargo flights, along with flights carrying medical supplies, utilities, and maintenance equipment, will still be allowed to operate under specific protocols.
Travel for uniformed personnel and government officials and employees for official business, especially those transporting medical supplies and other relief and humanitarian assistance, will also be allowed under specific guidelines.
