Alex Eala advances to Guadalajara 125 Open quarterfinals

Alex Eala defeated Varvara Lepchenko, 6(3)-7, 7-6(3), 6-3, in their Round of 16 match at the Guadalajara 125 Open in Mexico, which resumed Friday after being suspended due to rain.

The 20-year-old Filipina, ranked WTA No. 75, secured the win after resuming play with a 3-2 lead in the deciding set.

The match was a tight contest, with both previous sets decided by tiebreaks; Lepchenko won the first and Eala took the second.

Eala is scheduled to face Italy's Nicole Fossa Huergo in the quarterfinals.

She is the highest-seeded player remaining in the tournament at No. 2.

This marks Eala's first tournament after her historic US Open 2025 performance, where she became the first Filipina to win a Grand Slam main draw match.

Eala is also slated to compete in the Sao Paulo Open in Brazil from September 8 to 14.
