Alex Eala advances to Guadalajara 125 semis

Alex Eala defeated Nicole Fossa Huergo 7-6(2), 6-3 in the quarterfinals of the Guadalajara 125 Open to reach the semifinals.

Eala's victory followed her win over Varvara Lepchenko, which was resumed after being suspended due to bad weather the previous day.

In the match against Lepchenko, Eala led 3-2 before play was suspended and closed out the win to advance to the quarterfinals later in the day.

The first set of her match against Fossa Huergo saw Eala overcome a 1-4 deficit to take a 6-5 lead before winning a tiebreak.

Eala then dominated the second set, breaking a 2-all deadlock and winning the next three games to secure the match.

Eala will face American Kayla Day in the semifinals on Saturday, no earlier than 2:10 a.m.

Eala had previously defeated Arianne Hartono in the Round of 32.

Eala is eyeing another run to the final and her first WTA championship after finishing runner-up at the Lexus Eastbourne Open last June.

The Guadalajara Open is Eala's first tournament since her second-round exit at the US Open last week.

Eala is also set to compete in the Sao Paulo Open from September 8 to 14 in Brazil.
