2 CCG ships, 9 militia vessels surround Ayungin Shoal

Two China Coast Guard (CCG) ships were closely engaging two Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) vessels, BRP Bacayag and BRP Malapascua, in Ayungin Shoal.

Nine large Chinese maritime militia ships were also seen surrounding the shoal.

This incident occurred amidst preparations for a resupply mission to the Philippine Navy's BRP Sierra Madre.

It is unclear if China will impede the resupply boat itself, which could end the agreement reached after a June 17 confrontation last year.

The Philippines has emphasized its readiness and capability to defend its territorial claims in the West Philippine Sea amid the continued Chinese presence.
