7 NPA rebels killed in Negros Occidental clash

Seven New People's Army (NPA) rebels, identified as Reniel Locsin Cellon, Mary Jane Maguilat, Jhon Isidor Supelanas, "Pitong," Jhunrey Mejares, Glendel Tinio Mejares, and Charity Amacan, were killed in a clash with Philippine Army troops in Kabankalan City, Negros Occidental.

The firefights occurred Sunday morning in the mountainous area of Barangay Tapi, involving remnants of the NPA's Southwest and Southeast Fronts.

The Philippine Army stated that both rebel fronts had been previously declared dismantled.

Troops recovered six M16 rifles, one with an M203 grenade launcher, and a KG9 submachine gun following the gunbattle.

Major General Michael Samson, commander of the 3rd Infantry Division, urged remaining rebels to surrender, stating the operation should serve as a wake-up call.

Samson reiterated that the military will continue to pursue and neutralize armed rebels but emphasized that the door to peace remains open for those who wish to surrender.
