12,079 aftershocks recorded following magnitude 6.9 earthquake in Cebu

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) reported that the number of aftershocks from the magnitude 6.9 earthquake in Bogo City, Cebu has reached 12,079.

Out of the total aftershocks, 46 have been felt by residents, with strengths ranging from magnitude 1.0 to 5.8.

PHIVOLCS chief Dr. Teresito Bacolcol urged residents to seek expert advice from engineers before returning to damaged homes.

He emphasized that structures with visible damage could suffer complete collapse during strong aftershocks.

The death toll from the earthquake remains at 75, according to the Office of Civil Defense (OCD).

A total of 94,844 houses were damaged, with 89,224 partially damaged and 5,620 totally destroyed.
