Mary Jane Veloso set to return Dec 24, seeks clemency

The family and supporters of Mary Jane Veloso are praying for her safe return home at Baclaran Church on Monday as they mark the first day of Simbang Gabi.

Veloso is expected to depart Jakarta at 8 p.m. local time Tuesday and land in Manila by 6 a.m., according to BuCor Director General Gregorio Catapang Jr.

Upon her arrival, Veloso will be transferred directly to the Correctional Institution for Women (CIW) in Mandaluyong City for a five-day quarantine due to standard protocols.

Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin expressed gratitude towards Indonesia for facilitating Veloso's transfer and emphasized the importance of honoring conditions set for her repatriation.

Mary Jane's parents are hoping President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. will grant clemency for their daughter upon her return on December 24, as she is scheduled to undergo a five-day quarantine after which family visits can occur.

The CIW has prepared adobong baboy and pastillas for Veloso as per her request, with officials from the Department of Foreign Affairs arriving in Indonesia early Tuesday morning for her turnover.

Mary Jane will not be handcuffed or required to wear body armor during her return to ensure a smooth transfer.
