Regine Velasquez declines National Artist nod, cites other deserving artists

Singer Regine Velasquez expressed gratitude for being considered a potential National Artist but declined the suggestion, citing other deserving artists like Pilita Corrales and Jose Mari Chan.

Velasquez emphasized that she feels it is not her time yet to receive such recognition and mentioned there are more qualified individuals who should be recognized as National Artists while they are still alive.

Recently, Velasquez was honored with the Powerhouse award for her 37 years of making Original Pilipino Music at the inaugural Billboard Philippines Women in Music Awards last month.

During a surprise birthday party for co-host Melai Cantiveros-Francisco, Regine reiterated that she is not yet qualified to be named National Artist and highlighted the importance of honoring veteran artists like Pilita Corrales and Jose Mari Chan during their lifetime.

Despite declining the National Artist title for now, Velasquez appreciated the support and recognition from fans and media.
