UST wins 5th straight game, beats Ateneo in 3 sets

University of Santo Tomas extended its winning streak to five games by defeating Ateneo de Manila University in straight sets on Saturday at the Mall of Asia Arena.

Rookie spiker Angeline Poyos led all scorers with a career-high 26 points, including three aces and two blocks, as UST maintained their perfect record and best start in 13 years.

UST dominated in the first two sets but faced some resistance from Ateneo before pulling away to win 25-19, 25-16, 25-19.

Lyann De Guzman led the Blue Eagles with 11 points as they fell to a 1-4 record.

Poyos and setter Cassie Carballo emphasized the importance of maintaining consistency and avoiding complacency in their approach to the season, adopting a 'Mamba Mentality' inspired by late basketball great Kobe Bryant.

Both teams will play again on Wednesday; UST faces University of the Philippines while Ateneo takes on Adamson University.
