Roque: No contradiction among officials on COVID-19 surge cause

Presidential spokesperson Harry Roque denied on Thursday that government officials are contradicting each other regarding the cause of the recent surge in COVID-19 cases.

Roque stated that all officials agree the surge is due to new variants and increased mobility, despite Health Secretary Francisco Duque III suggesting easing of restrictions led to the increase.

Trade Secretary Ramon Lopez insisted on Wednesday that reopening the economy did not lead to the rise in cases, citing a decrease from 4,000 daily cases last July to below 2,000 by February this year.

Lopez attributed the surge to 'vaccine optimism' and low public compliance with health protocols.
