Goni weakens after hitting Bicol, kills 16

At least 16 people died and three went missing as Super Typhoon Goni pummeled the Bicol region in eastern Philippines on Sunday.

About 373,000 families or 1.5 million people were affected across five regions, with half a million forced to evacuate.

Goni made two landfalls in Bicol before weakening and moving away from the country; storm signals were lifted by Monday morning.

The typhoon is expected to leave Philippine waters on Tuesday morning as another storm, Typhoon Atsani (locally named Sioni), entered the area but won’t affect the country for at least three days.
