Speedboat owned by Hadji Muhtamad mayor catches fire, injuring 10

A speedboat owned by Hadji Muhtamad Mayor Arsina Kahing-Nanoh caught fire shortly after departing Tres Marias Wharf in Barangay Baliwasan, Zamboanga City on Wednesday, injuring at least 10 people.

The blaze broke out when a spark from the engine ignited the vessel just minutes after departure, causing all passengers to jump into the sea for safety.

Among those injured were Mayor Nanoh and nine others, including a police escort, staff members, and family relatives of the mayor, who sustained minor burns and were taken to a nearby hospital.

Zamboanga City Fire District Marshal Supt. Leo Pioquinto said that due to security concerns, speedboats are commonly used by local officials traveling between Basilan and Zamboanga City.

The fire was fully extinguished by firefighters at around 5:29 p.m., with estimated damages at approximately PHP1 million.

Investigations are ongoing to determine the exact cause of the incident.
