Sotto doubts Pope's civil union call will sway PH lawmakers

Senate President Vicente Sotto III claimed Pope Francis' comments supporting same-sex civil unions were taken out of context.

Sotto argued that the Pope meant families should not ostracize homosexuals, and suggested the remarks were misunderstood.

On Friday, transgender lawmaker Geraldine Roman criticized Sotto for acting 'more popish than the Pope', questioning his stance on legal recognition of same-sex unions.

When asked if Filipino lawmakers would reconsider the SOGIE bill due to Pope Francis' comments, Sotto expressed doubt, stating that while same-sex unions are tolerated in some areas, they lack legal recognition.
