7 cops in Albuera mayoral shooting test neg but probe continues

Seven police officers who are persons of interest in the shooting of Albuera, Leyte mayoral candidate Kerwin Espinosa have tested negative in paraffin tests according to the Philippine National Police (PNP) on Tuesday.

Despite the negative results, PNP Public Information Office chief Police Colonel Randulf Tuaño stated that the officers remain under investigation due to possible manipulation of test outcomes through chemical use or wearing gloves before shooting.

The seven individuals are still in restricted custody as investigations continue and they face charges for illegal possession of firearms after being found with 10 unregistered weapons.

Espinosa was shot during a campaign event on Thursday afternoon when an unidentified man fired from the ceiling of the stage where he was speaking, also injuring vice mayor candidate Mariel Espinosa Marinay and a minor.

The PNP investigation continues to examine evidence without considering political allegations made by Espinosa against Leyte 4th District Rep. Richard Gomez and his wife, Ormoc City Mayor Lucy Torres.
