Sescon ordained bishop of Balanga on EDSA anniversary

On Tuesday, February 25, 2025, Father Rufino 'Jun' Sescon Jr., former aide to Manila Archbishop Jaime Cardinal Sin and rector of Quiapo Church, was ordained as the bishop of Balanga at the Manila Cathedral.

The ordination ceremony coincided with the 39th anniversary of the EDSA People Power Revolution that toppled the Marcos dictatorship in 1986, with Sescon honoring his mentor's legacy.

Manila Archbishop Jose Cardinal Advincula emphasized Sescon's grace and dedication during his homily, urging him to lead fearlessly as bishop of Balanga.

Sescon will be officially installed as bishop on Saturday, March 1 after being appointed by Pope Francis on December 3, 2024. He paid tribute to Sin for nurturing his early priesthood and ensuring the EDSA spirit continues.

Under Sescon's leadership, Quiapo Church became a national shrine and the Feast of the Black Nazarene was commemorated across all dioceses in the Philippines for the first time in 2025.
