Senate may convene VP Duterte's impeachment trial Aug 4

The impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte may begin on August 4, 2025, according to Senator Joel Villanueva.

Some senators have expressed differing opinions on convening the trial on that date, with Senator Francis Pangilinan seeking clarification and emphasizing the need for prompt action in accordance with constitutional mandates.

Senators Vicente Sotto III and Panfilo Lacson echoed calls for an early start to the trial due to previous delays, while Senator Paolo Benigno Aquino IV stated he is prepared for his role as a senator-judge.

Vice President Duterte faces charges of betrayal of public trust, culpable violation of the Constitution, graft and corruption, among other high crimes due to alleged misuse of funds and threats against government officials.

With the Senate initially convening on June 10 but remanding the articles of impeachment back to the House of Representatives for further certification, preparations are now focusing on the August 4 start date.

Senator Panfilo Lacson emphasized the need for a plenary discussion and vote on the proposed schedule before making a decision.
