Sen Imee Marcos probes One-China policy, MDT activation

Senator Imee Marcos convened the Senate committee on foreign affairs to probe the status of the Philippines' One-China policy under her brother President Ferdinand 'Bongbong' Marcos Jr.

During the meeting, Senator Marcos questioned officials about the country's stance on Taiwan and its adherence to the Mutual Defense Treaty (MDT) with the United States.

Foreign Affairs Secretary Maria Theresa Lazaro clarified that invoking the MDT is not automatic and involves a process of discussion between governments and congressional approval.

Senator Marcos insisted that MDT activation was 'automatic,' while Tulfo suggested reviewing the MDT and Mutual Defense Guidelines established in 2023.

The committee plans to hold another hearing with defense and military officials, highlighting ongoing tensions within the Marcos clan over foreign policy.
