SC ruling halts Makati Subway Project, arbitration started

The Makati Subway Project has been halted due to a Supreme Court ruling that altered the territorial jurisdiction of some areas previously within Makati City, making the project economically and operationally unfeasible.

Philippine Infradev Holdings, the private sector proponent, stated that arbitration proceedings have started at the Singapore International Arbitration Centre to address issues in the joint venture agreement with Makati City.

The Supreme Court ruling in December 2021 confirmed that certain areas, including parts of the renowned financial district BGC (Fort Bonifacio), now fall under Taguig City's jurisdiction.

This decision has affected the location of the subway project's depot and several stations, leading to significant challenges for its implementation.

Makati Mayor Abby Binay acknowledged the setback but assured constituents that alternative transport projects are being explored to alleviate traffic and provide affordable transportation options for commuters.
