Rep Roman proposes Digital Council to fight disinfo

Bataan Rep. Geraldine Roman proposed the creation of a Digital Council of the Philippines to combat disinformation without government censorship.

The council would include content creators, digital advertisers, public relations firms, social media platforms like Facebook and X, AI groups, and representatives from government agencies such as DICT and NBI.

Roman emphasized that this non-government regulatory body will have ethical standards for digital content and technical means to fact-check fake news within 48 hours.

House Deputy Majority Leader Paolo Ortega V supported the initiative, warning of the dangers of unregulated social media and suggesting campaigns against fake news should start at grassroots levels.

The Presidential Communications Office is exploring the possibility of establishing a regulatory body to monitor social media content, while Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla said the DOJ is studying potential amendments to the cyberlibel law.
