Rep Ann Matibag files Anti-Elder Abuse Law bill

Laguna 1st District Rep. Ann Matibag filed House Bill No. 2012, known as the proposed 'Anti-Elder Abuse Law of 2025,' at the House of Representatives on Wednesday, July 16.

The bill aims to address growing cases of elder abuse by defining various forms of abuse and establishing penalties for them under existing laws like the Revised Penal Code and Anti-Violence Against Women and Children Act.

Specifically, the bill outlines physical, sexual, emotional or psychological, financial or material exploitation, neglect, and abandonment as prohibited acts directed at elderly persons.

The congresswoman highlighted that Filipino families are traditionally close, emphasizing the importance of supporting and protecting elders and noted numerous cases of elder abuse in her district.

The measure also cites the constitution's recognition of the family's duty to care for elderly members but allows state intervention when necessary, aiming to end such abuses.
