Marcos directs study on PHP1 jeepney fare increase

Malacañang announced on Thursday that President Ferdinand 'Bongbong' Marcos Jr. has directed concerned agencies to thoroughly study the request from public transport groups for a PHP1 fare increase for public utility jeepneys.

President Marcos has tasked both the Department of Transportation (DOTr) and his entire economic team to assess the proposal's impact on commuters and operators, ensuring a comprehensive review.

Palace Press Officer Undersecretary Claire Castro stated that this matter would involve consultations with various stakeholders, including PUV drivers, operators, and commuters, to ensure a balanced approach.

Transport groups had previously requested the fare increase due to rising fuel and maintenance costs, with Pasang Masda leading the petition for a provisional PHP1 increase last week.

The Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) is also reviewing the petition for a provisional fare hike, as announced in a press briefing by Castro.

Public consultations and hearings will be held to gather input from all affected parties before any decision is made.
