President Marcos supports Blue Economy Act

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. is expected to support the proposed Blue Economy Act, which aims to enhance the country's marine resources and safeguard fisherfolk rights.

The bill was passed by the Senate last August and its counterpart in the House of Representatives was approved in 2023.

Palace Press Officer Claire Castro confirmed that President Marcos supports the measure during a press briefing on Thursday, emphasizing his commitment to improving the environment and uplifting people's lives, particularly those of fishermen.

Senators Loren Legarda and Risa Hontiveros have renewed their support for the bill, hoping it will be included in the President's upcoming State of the Nation Address (Sona).

Legarda, the principal author of the bill and an environmental advocate, pledged to push for its passage in the 20th Congress.

The proposed measure commits the Philippines to harnessing its vast ocean resources for jobs, growth, and long-term marine protection, aligning with global efforts to safeguard and sustainably use the seas.
