Gov eyes pooled COVID-19 testing in low prevalence areas

The government is considering pooled testing for COVID-19 in areas with low prevalence.

Under this method, samples from multiple individuals are combined and tested using one kit; if a pool tests positive, individual tests will be conducted.

Health Undersecretary Maria Rosario Vergeire said it's suitable for sectors like vendors, cashiers, security guards, and grocery workers.

Private sector leader Joey Concepcion is piloting pooled testing in Makati with pools of five individuals, aiming to expand to other parts of Metro Manila.

Concepcion noted that if infection levels decline, pool sizes could increase to 10 for cost efficiency.

Pooled testing aims to speed up and increase testing capacity while helping companies comply with new labor guidelines requiring regular PCR tests.
