Lavezares police chief and officer relieved for using M16 in fiesta; PNP investigates, emphasizes transparency, accountability

Two police officers, including the chief of police in Lavezares, Northern Samar, were relieved from their posts after a video surfaced showing an M16 rifle being used to signal the start of a motorboat race during the town's fiesta celebration on August 20.

Col. Sonnie Omengan signed a special order on August 24th, reassigning Police Master Sergeant Jimmy Florano and relieving the chief from their positions at the Lavezares Municipal Police Station.

The Philippine National Police (PNP) stated that such behavior was unacceptable and constituted a clear deviation from established protocols regarding firearm use.

Firearms are issued strictly for law enforcement purposes and must never be used in ceremonial or symbolic capacities without explicit clearance, according to the PNP.
