POC seeks funding for historic men's curling team

The Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) is seeking funding from President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. to support the country's men's curling team following their historic gold medal win at the 9th Asian Winter Games in Harbin, China.

Philippine Curling Team members Marc and Enrico Pfister, Christian Haller, Allen Frei, and Benjo Delarmente have been personally shouldering their expenses for each competition without government support.

The team defeated South Korea, 5-3, in the final on February 14 to secure the gold medal, marking a historic achievement for both the Philippines and Southeast Asia.

POC President Abraham 'Bambol' Tolentino emphasized the need for financial assistance to sustain the team's journey to the Milano Cortina Winter Olympic Games this October and beyond, noting they also plan to request more support for other winter sports athletes like alpine skiers, figure skaters, snowboarders, freestyle skiers, and short track speed skaters.

Curling Pilipinas President Benjo Delarmente expressed confidence that the team will secure spots for the Olympic pre-qualification event this October and ultimately qualify for the Winter Olympics in December 2026.

The PH men's curling team thanked supporters who have been behind them throughout their journey, highlighting their success as a testament to the country's potential in winter sports.
