PLDT completes Apricot underwater cable system

PLDT Inc., a telecommunications giant, has completed the installation of an underwater cable system called Apricot at landing stations in Aurora and Davao.

The 12,000-kilometer-long fiber-optic submarine cable system is designed to support more than 211 terabit per second (Tbps) of data traffic.

This new infrastructure boosts PLDT's international capacity by up to 33 percent or over 140 Tbps and aims to meet the growing demands in the Asia Pacific region.

The Apricot cable system connects Singapore to Japan with branches to the Philippines, Indonesia, Taiwan, and Guam, offering an alternate route from the West Philippine Sea.

PLDT Chief Operating Officer Butch Jimenez highlighted that this system not only supports international data traffic but also enhances network resilience between Luzon and Mindanao.

With its strategic location, PLDT aims to accelerate high-capacity data services in response to increasing demands for cloud computing, e-commerce, and content delivery.
