Chinese vessels challenge PN patrols off Batanes

Chinese warships and coast guard vessels were detected off Batanes province last week, prompting radio challenges from Philippine Navy (PN) patrols.

Two China Coast Guard vessels - CCG 3301 and 3304 - were spotted near Mavulis Island in Batanes on August 7 while BRP Emilio Jacinto was patrolling the area.

Despite repeated radio challenges, the Chinese ships refused to respond until they left around 11 p.m. following continued monitoring by PN patrols.

The Navy's Northern Luzon Naval Command condemned the 'unauthorized presence' of the Chinese vessels and emphasized their commitment to safeguarding national sovereignty and enforcing maritime law.

This latest incursion is part of a string of recent Chinese maritime provocations in Philippine waters, with 49 Chinese ships spotted near Philippine features in June - the highest number since the start of the year.

The PN's patrols reflect its dedication to protecting Philippine sovereign rights within its exclusive economic zone.
