Philippines draw 1-1 with Myanmar in ASEAN Championship opener

The Philippines drew 1-1 with Myanmar in their opening match of the 2024 ASEAN Championship on Thursday, December 12, at Rizal Memorial Stadium.

Myanmar took an early lead when Maung Maung Lwin scored in the 72nd minute, but Bjorn Kristensen equalized for the Philippines through a penalty kick after Myanmar's goalkeeper received a yellow card.

A video assistant referee (VAR) decision nullified Myanmar's second goal attempt by Laat Wai Phon in the 63rd minute, preventing an additional score for Myanmar.

Despite controlling much of the match with 22 shots on target, the Philippines could not secure another goal as Myanmar’s defense held strong.

With this draw, the Philippines moved to third place in Group B with one point, while Myanmar dropped to fourth after their earlier loss to Laos.

The Philippines will face Laos on December 15 at the New Laos National Stadium and then return home for a match against Vietnam on December 18.
