DOH warns risks using Avigan on pregnant women

The Department of Health (DOH) has warned about the risks of using Avigan, an anti-flu drug from Japan, which is being prepared for clinical trials to test its effectiveness against COVID-19.

Health Undersecretary Maria Rosario Vergeire stated that while Avigan offers hope in treating coronavirus patients, it may not be safe for pregnant women and could result in birth defects.

The Japanese government will provide a free supply of Avigan for the trial, which will involve around 100 patients.
