Typhoon Carina intensifies, raises Signal No. 2 in Batanes, No. 1 in parts of Luzon

Typhoon Carina (Gaemi) slightly intensified on Tuesday, raising Signal No. 2 in parts of Batanes and Signal No. 1 in several Luzon areas as it maintained its strength with maximum sustained winds of 140 kph and gusts up to 170 kph.

The typhoon's center is located approximately 320 kilometers east of Basco, Batanes, posing risks of heavy rainfall and strong winds across multiple regions due to the enhanced southwest monsoon or 'habagat'.

Moderate to intense rain with potential flooding and landslides are expected in western Luzon through Thursday, while gale-force gusts are anticipated in 16 areas including Metro Manila.

PAGASA issued gale warnings for coastal waters of Batanes due to rough to very rough seas (waves up to 4.5 meters high), advising mariners of motor bancas and similar-sized vessels to take caution.

Carina is forecast to make landfall in the northern portion of Taiwan between Wednesday evening and Thursday morning, then exit the Philippine area of responsibility hours later, with possible impacts on southeastern China later in the week.
