Paalam leads 7-Philippine team to World Boxing Championships

Olympic silver medalist Carlo Paalam will lead a seven-member Philippine team competing in the World Boxing Championships from September 4-14 in Liverpool, England.

Paalam departed for a mini-training camp in Sheffield on Sunday to prepare for the event, alongside Southeast Asian Games medalist Riza Pasuit and national boxing squad coach Reynaldo Galido.

The team includes Ronald Chavez Jr., Jay Bryan Baricuatro, Junmilardo Ogayre, Mark Ashley Fajardo, and Ofelia Magno, who will compete in various weight categories.

Paalam will fight in the men's 55kg division while Pasuit competes in the women's 60kg category. Chavez Jr., scheduled to fight in the men's 70kg division, awaits visa approval.

Baricuatro and Ogayre are training in Xinjiang, China, while Fajardo and Magno join from Bangkok.

Association of Boxing Alliance in the Philippines Secretary-General Marcus Manalo emphasized the significance of the championships as the highest level of competition outside the Olympics for Olympic-style boxing.
