OWWA launches first Seafarers' Hub in Manila, offering legal aid and free services

On Thursday, the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) officially launched its first Seafarers' Hub located at 1108 A. Mabini Street, Malate, Manila.

The hub serves as an information center for seafarers’ rights and privileges, offering legal assistance through partnerships with organizations like the Integrated Bar of the Philippines (IBP) and free Wi-Fi, food, and local calls to keep them connected with their families.

Seafarers can use the 24-hour facility for relaxation, which aims to protect them from fraudulent practices by providing a safe space away from street scams where they may fall victim to 'ambulance chasers'.

OWWA Administrator Arnell Ignacio emphasized that the hub is part of President Marcos Jr.'s directive to ensure the welfare and safety of overseas Filipino workers.

Year 2023 statistics showed an all-time high deployment of over 578,626 Filipino seafarers overseas, underscoring the importance of such comprehensive support for seafarer welfare.
