NGCP issues Yellow Alert for Visayas, Mindanao grids due to potential power outages

The National Grid Corp of the Philippines (NGCP) has issued a Yellow Alert for the Visayas and Mindanao grids from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Friday, August 1, 2025, due to potential power outages.

A yellow alert is triggered when there is insufficient operating margin to meet the grid's contingency requirements; in the Visayas, peak demand reached 2,449 MW while available capacity stood at 2,569 MW.

In Mindanao, system demand reached 2,667 MW with an available capacity of 2,827 MW, leading to a total of 423 MW and 638.3 MW unavailable for Visayas and Mindanao grids respectively due to forced outages or reduced capacity.

The NGCP cited significant numbers of plants on unplanned/forced outages and de-rated capacities as reasons for the yellow alert status in both regions.

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. previously promised during his State of the Nation Address to address the power crisis by bringing 200 new plants online before the end of his term.

The Luzon grid, however, is currently operating normally without any alerts.
