Gatchalian backs NBI probe into fake news vloggers

Senator Sherwin Gatchalian expressed support for the National Bureau of Investigation's (NBI) initiative to investigate vloggers and online trolls spreading false information on social media.

Gatchalian emphasized that the proliferation of fake news poses a serious threat to public trust and unity, especially as more people rely on social media for information.

The senator urged the NBI to file appropriate charges against individuals who deliberately spread disinformation, particularly content that polarizes public opinion and undermines democratic processes.

Last week, NBI Director Jaime Santiago announced plans to investigate 20 vloggers allegedly spreading fake news online, two of whom already face arrest warrants.

Santiago mentioned specific cases involving US-based vlogger Maharlika and former presidential spokesperson Harry Roque for posts encouraging a 'people power' movement.

While respecting freedom of speech, Gatchalian noted that fabricating stories to create unrest is not protected under the law.
