NBI seizes PHP32M illegal vapes, arrests 3 suspects
The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) seized over PHP32 million worth of illegal vape products and arrested three suspects in Biñan City, Laguna on Monday, July 7.
During a press briefing Tuesday, NBI Director Jaime Santiago said the items were unregistered and substandard, with the warehouse used for storage lacking proper permits.
Using Open-Source Intelligence (OSINT) and Human Intelligence (HUMINT), investigators identified the suspects through cybercrime monitoring efforts and conducted test-buy operations that led to the seizure of 40,500 vape units worth PHP31.9 million and 3,880 vape pods valued at PHP640,200.
The suspects arrested include Kert Lester Simbajon, Javier Dirampatun, and Romeo Cada, who will face charges under the Vaporized Nicotine and Non-Nicotine Products Regulation Act and the Cybercrime Prevention Act.
Santiago advised the public to avoid purchasing from random outlets and instead buy from established mall stores where illegal goods are not allowed.
The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) warned that illicit vape products can be identified by a lack of license marks, tax stamps, improper health warnings, and flavors appealing to minors.
