Meralco cuts electricity rates by nearly 11 centavos per kWh

Customers of Manila Electric Company (Meralco) will see lower electricity bills this June due to a decrease in generation charges.

Meralco announced a reduction of nearly 11 centavos per kilowatt-hour for the June billing period, resulting in savings ranging from P22 for typical customers consuming 200 kWh to P54 for those using 500 kWh.

This is the second consecutive month that Meralco has reduced electricity rates, with the overall rate dropping to P12.1552 from P12.2628 in May.

The reduction stems from lower fuel costs and an improvement in the Wholesale Electricity Spot Market (WESM) prices, despite a slight increase in ancillary service fees.

Despite expectations of lower demand during the rainy season, uncertainties remain due to potential maintenance activities at power plants which could affect supply and pricing.

Meralco reminded customers about available subsidy programs like the lifeline rate for marginalized households and a 5% discount for senior citizens with consumption below 100 kWh.
