Marcos Jr.'s P20/kg rice program starts in Visayas

Three years after Ferdinand Marcos Jr.'s election, rice will be sold at P20 per kilogram in certain areas of the Visayas starting this week.

The program aims to alleviate poverty by providing subsidized rice to qualified beneficiaries such as senior citizens and those enrolled in social welfare programs.

Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr. stated that lower global prices and the need to free up National Food Authority warehouses prompted the initiative.

Initially, local governments will cover half of the P13 price gap, with plans for a nationwide rollout until 2028 as directed by Marcos Jr.

Critics like Vice President Sara Duterte question the timing and intent behind the program, suggesting it may be an electoral strategy to win votes in key regions.
