Marcos directs DA to intensify ASF biosecurity, vaccinate pigs

President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. has instructed the Department of Agriculture (DA) to intensify biosecurity measures and consolidate livestock in response to African swine fever (ASF).

During a meeting with Regional Development Council 3 in San Jose Del Monte City, Bulacan on Friday, Marcos emphasized that consolidation is key due to difficulties in managing backyard farms.

Agriculture Undersecretary-designate for Livestock Constante Palabrica reported that the ongoing vaccination has immunized 50,000 hogs and that 80 percent of vaccinated pigs are well-protected.

Palabrica also stated that around half a million ASF vaccines have been purchased, with close to 200,000 doses set for use in Region 3.

The DA expects to secure FDA approval for commercial vaccination against ASF by April, aiming to accelerate the recovery of the local hog industry from the effects of ASF.

Palabrica assured the President that they are implementing biosecurity measures and educating farmers on proper handling, while noting that the ASF situation is under control.
