LP backs Romualdez, boosts supermajority to 285

The Liberal Party of the Philippines (LP) has expressed support for House Speaker Ferdinand Martin G. Romualdez, reinforcing his position in the chamber amid speculations about potential challenges to his leadership.

Four LP lawmakers have joined a 'supermajority coalition' supporting Speaker Romualdez, bringing the total number of supporters to 285 with 278 having signed formal declarations, emphasizing legislative continuity and national stability.

Deputy Speaker David C. Suarez stated that the support for Romualdez includes political parties such as Lakas-CMD, Nacionalista Party, National Unity Party, Nationalist People's Coalition, Partido Federal ng Pilipinas, and the Party-list Coalition Foundation Inc.

Speculations have emerged following the May 12 elections about some lawmakers positioning themselves to contest the speakership role, a post that wields significant influence over more than 300 legislators.

Senate leadership could also see changes with Senators-elect Maria Imelda Marcos and Vicente Sotto III announcing their bids for the position currently held by Senate President Francis Escudero.
