Lav Diaz's 'Magellan', starring Gael Garcia Bernal, debuts in Cannes Premiere

Lav Diaz's film 'Magellan', starring Gael Garcia Bernal as Ferdinand Magellan, will debut in the Cannes Premiere section of the 78th Cannes Film Festival.

The movie was shot in the Philippines, Portugal, and Spain and is part of a line-up that includes new additions such as 'Renai Saiban' by Koji Fukada and 'The Love That Remains' by Hlynur Pálmason.

It marks Lav's third appearance at Cannes after 'Norte, Hangganan ng Kasaysayan' in 2013 and 'Ang Hupa' in 2019.

For the festival debut, Diaz has edited the film into a nearly three-hour version, while planning a full nine-hour cut that includes Magellan's wife Beatriz portrayed by Ângela Ramos.

The cast also features Ronnie Lazaro and Hazel Orencio as supporting actors, frequent collaborators of Lav Diaz.
