Kanlaon Volcano raised to Alert Level 3 after December 9 eruption

Kanlaon Volcano on Negros island experienced increased seismic activity and was raised to Alert Level 3 by PHIVOLCS after an explosive eruption on December 9.

The volcano has been continuously displaying seismic activity since June, with the latest event causing significant damage to agriculture with losses nearing P1 million.

Kanlaon Volcano's edifice remains inflated and residents were advised to evacuate within a six-kilometer radius of the summit, while flying near the volcano is prohibited.

The hazards posed by Kanlaon include sudden explosive eruptions, lava flow, ashfall, pyroclastic density currents, rockfalls, and lahars during heavy rains.

PHIVOLCS noted that an upgrade from Alert Level 2 to Level 3 indicates a magmatic eruption has begun that may progress to further explosive eruptions.
