Joseph Sy arrested at NAIA, linked to Chinese national; PCG revokes membership

Joseph Sy was arrested at Ninoy Aquino International Airport on August 21 after his fingerprints matched those of a Chinese national.

Senator Risa Hontiveros warned that Sy's entry into the Philippine Coast Guard Auxiliary could have serious implications for national security.

Sy, who is a businessman and major player in the mining sector, was appointed to the PCG Auxiliary in July 2018 after completing standard application requirements.

The Philippine Coast Guard spokesperson clarified that Sy’s involvement was limited to civilian volunteer functions without access to critical installations or sensitive offices.

Following the controversy, the PCG has delisted Sy and revoked his membership status.

Sy is facing deportation and local charges, with authorities raising concerns about potential fraudulent schemes for business and criminal activities.
